Materials Management
Both the Environmental Affairs and Safety and Regulatory Affairs Departments assess the potential effects of new and proposed raw materials on the environment, employees and consumers. When a material is in use that may increase the hazards to any of the three, efforts are made to reformulate products. Site EHS staff members review non-inventory chemicals to help find safer alternatives.
Community Right to Know
The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. tracks material use at its facilities in a number of ways:
- Inventory management systems are used that can give present-day information on the total amount of raw materials or products that are currently stored at any location.
- Each facility has procedures to check all new materials upon arrival.
- All our facilities comply with local regulations regarding the use of certain substances in the manufacturing or ancillary process. These reports are available from the local regulatory agencies as part of Community Right to Know programs.
In 1997, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., in cooperation with the Coastal Rainforest Coalition (now Forest Ethics), announced its commitment to phase out the use of products that come from the destruction of the world's ancient forests. The Company has agreed to discontinue purchasing components from companies who use products made from old growth.
