EU 3-1 Sunscreen Labeling Statement

The Estée Lauder Companies strongly believes in the importance of sun protection, and we welcome and support the EU Commission Recommendation to standardize the labeling of in-sun products. We embrace this voluntary initiative as an opportunity to continue the Company’s commitment to our consumers.

It is important to note that the Commission’s recommendation does not question the safety of sun protection products currently on the market. Rather, the Commission’s objective is directed toward communication of the UVA/UVB protection of products formulated for in-sun usage with improved labeling and consumer understanding.

The UVB protection provided by a sunscreen, as indicated by the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) number, is recognized globally. However, unlike SPF, a product’s UVA protection may be communicated in a variety of ways. Under the EU Commission’s recommendation, a UVA symbol may appear on products that have a suggested ratio of UVB to UVA protection.

Our Company will gradually phase-in sun care items with a UVA symbol beginning in Spring/Summer 2008. During the phase-in period, consumers may continue to safely use all of our sun care products with confidence. They provide excellent protection when used as directed which is maintained during sun exposure.

The Estée Lauder Companies devotes extensive resources to developing innovative cosmetics, skin care and in-sun products with effective and substantiated UVA and UVB protection. We stand behind the safety and efficacy of all of our products, which comply with the stringent regulations of the EU and other markets where they are sold.
