ELC recently convened R&D leaders and external scientists for a Scientific Advisory Board Meeting at its China Innovation Labs as part of its efforts to expand the boundaries of night skin science.
Press Release, Oct 10, 2024
SHANGHAI, October 10, 2024 - The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) recently hosted its latest Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) Meeting, on the science of night for skin recovery, at its state-of-the-art China Innovation Labs located in Shanghai. This SAB convened leading external scientists and dermatologists from the Asia region, alongside ELC scientists, to discuss the latest cutting-edge research on the scientific relationships between sleep, circadian rhythm, and skin recovery. As part of the SAB, ELC also facilitated a roundtable discussion with attendees to better understand how these findings can be integrated across the product development process to further advance skin care product innovation.
“We’re honored and delighted to host the Scientific Advisory Board on the science of night at our China Innovation Labs, where we bring together advanced scientific research with robust consumer understanding to craft cutting-edge solutions that can fulfill the distinct needs and aspirations of our Chinese consumers. We hope to amplify these learnings across Asia, and ultimately to all our consumers across the globe,” said Jane Anders, Senior Vice President, Asia Innovation, R&D, Product Development, and Packaging Development.
Skin physiology undergoes significant changes during sleep, governed by the body’s and the skin’s internal clock. In an era when quality sleep is highly sought after, yet often elusive, night skin care is continuing to grow as one of the most important elements of consumer skin care routines, representing a crucial market segment. ELC scientists are among the leading scientists around the world continuing to work to uncover and understand the profound effects of circadian rhythm on skin, and ELC leverages the latest research in this field to shape its approach to nighttime skin care.
With more than 40 years of research, ELC remains at the forefront of overnight skin repair innovation. Its steadfast commitment to nocturnal skin research has fueled a multitude of scientific discoveries, resulting in the creation of breakthrough products that empower the skin to harness the recovery potential from night and circadian rhythm. Two recent debuts leveraging night science research include Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Overnight Treatment and La Mer’s NEW Rejuvenating Night Cream.
“Through our constant research on skin’s unique night biology and in partnership with leading external collaborators, we continue to discover more about the skin’s precise night functions. Understanding how nighttime is critical in maximizing skin repair and recovery has been our mission for more than 40 years, and as a result, we have been able to create breakthrough technologies that provide meaningful benefit to our consumers,” said Nadine Pernodet, PhD, Senior Vice President, Bioscience, Advanced Technology Pioneering. “Convenings such as this latest SAB embody our deeply rooted scientific values and enable us to continue identifying new breakthroughs. We look forward to incorporating these latest findings from this meeting into future night skin care discoveries, treatments, and regiments for all our consumers around the world.”
The line-up of distinguished scientists represented a wide range of expertise from fundamental science to clinical research, including sleep science, circadian rhythm, night-specific ingredients, and clinical dermatology. The advisory board members shared learnings on sleep and its impact on different physiological pathways, ranging from overall health to specific aspects of skin aging. In addition to the long-standing focus on skin physiology and its relationship with circadian rhythm, the discussions also addressed ways of elevating the efficacy of cosmetic procedures alongside effective nighttime skin care approaches and products.
As noted by Professor Yung Hou Wong, advisory board member and Dean of Science and Chair Professor of Life Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, “Understanding the science of nighttime biological processes is pivotal in advancing our approach to skin health. Collaborations with ELC allow us to help translate this crucial knowledge into innovative solutions that enhance both our understanding and the efficacy of skin care.”
This meeting on the science of night, the latest in ELC’s long-standing efforts to convene leaders in science, unveiled a deeper understanding of sleep science and unique skin functions resulting from its nighttime rhythm. As the company moves forward, ELC is committed to redefining the future of skin beauty via continuous collaborations with its esteemed board members as well as a broader network of leading experts in the field of night science.
Around the world, ELC is dedicated to cutting-edge science with multidisciplinary expertise ranging from basic science and advanced technologies to the intersections of physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. ELC R&D has 75 years of formulation authority and is deeply integrated into the scientific community, regularly presenting at leading events and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
