Thanks to the spirit and resilience of The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) family globally, 2022 was a year of amazing accomplishments and forward momentum for our company. As 2023 begins, it’s important to reflect on the many incredible initiatives, events, and milestones from this past year. Across brands, regions, and functions, our global ELC family is powering possibilities for our organization, our industry, and our communities. To showcase this great work, a handful of ELC leaders across the globe have shared their favorite photo of the year and the story that it tells.
Below is a small sampling of the incredible amount of work that’s been accomplished across ELC this year. These photos and stories serve as a reminder of the passion, innovation, and impact that ELC will continue to put forth into 2023!
2022 marked the completion of ELC’s hand sanitizer production across the Melville, USA, Oevel, Belgium, and Whitman, UK, manufacturing facilities, after ELC swiftly mobilized to produce nearly 1 million bottles at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. To extend gratitude to the many employee volunteers who brought this initiative to life, William P. Lauder, Executive Chairman, joined the R&D and Supply Chain teams in Melville for a bench dedication ceremony this past June.
“The Melville 350 plant employees are truly resilient and selfless. So many volunteered to come into the plant, despite most other businesses around us being shut down at the beginning of the pandemic, to support the start-up and special production of hand sanitizer.“The employees pictured were a part of something truly special, quickly pivoting to do what mattered most at the time, making and supplying hand sanitizer. Their courage and dedication helped us to unite and marshal our energy for a great, common purpose—to provide critical supplies to those bringing the fight to COVID-19, supporting our colleagues on the front line and health care workers in our community.”
– David Santiago, Executive Director of Manufacturing Operations

2022 marked the 5th anniversary of ELC’s partnership with Springer Nature for the Inspiring Women in Science awards. The awards promote gender equality in STEM research and outreach. As a female-founded company, ELC feels it is imperative for women and girls to have the resources they need to reach their highest potential, and is honored to partner with Springer Nature, a global organization that shares these same values, to help drive meaningful change.
“Partnering with Springer Nature, publisher of Nature, the world's most preeminent multidisciplinary science journal, is a personal highlight for me each year, but this year was particularly special as we celebrated a milestone 5 successful years of our Inspiring Women in Science awards!
There are two awards. The first honors extraordinary science and engineering talent of the highest caliber with the Scientific Achievement Award and the second recognizes grassroots efforts to increase STEM exposure, education, and retention for girls and young women with the Scientific Outreach Award, which is focused on developing and disadvantaged areas where there is little opportunity and support available.
I’m pictured with Tem Menina no Circuito, who won this year’s Scientific Outreach Award for the tremendous work these three phenomenal professors are doing to open doors in STEM to young girls who, without their relentless drive, would not have the opportunity.”
– Lisa Napolione, Senior Vice President, Global R&D

ELC has partnered with non-governmental organization (NGO) Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation (KSCF) since 2005 to address some of the issues surrounding child labor in the mica mining industry. KSCF works with local communities in the region to develop proactive and sustainable solutions to eradicating child labor in the Indian mica mining industry, including through the development of Bal Mitra Grams (BMGs), or Child Friendly Villages.
Child Friendly Villages seek to prevent children from working in the mica mines by promoting education and enrolling children in school. They also assist in the formation of child councils, which empower the youth to be self-advocates, and find ways to work with local governments to address critical child rights issues like gender parity and access to food and water. Through June 2022, ELC supported the establishment of more than 290 Child Friendly Villages.
“This is a picture of my hero Champa Kumari, with me (David Hircock) in the background. Champa was rescued from mica mining when she was 12. Since then, she has become my hero, rescuing other children from the mica mines and working against child labor, child marriage, and girl feticide. I am happy to be in the background, facilitating the work of these amazing children. I am so proud to work for The Estée Lauder Companies, whose work with the Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation has enabled the rescue of nearly 14,000 other children from the mines since 2005. The work is always done from the perspective of ‘It’s the right thing to do’ and not a marketing tactic.
“I usually give my camera to a youth in the village–with one rule–keep the strap around your neck. I haven’t lost a single camera yet!”
– David Hircock, Executive Director, Corporate Sustainability
This October marked the 30th anniversary of The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign (The Campaign). In the 30 years since Evelyn H. Lauder launched The Campaign and co-created the Pink Ribbon in 1992, The Campaign’s mission to help create a breast cancer-free world for all has remained steadfast. Together, The Campaign and The Estée Lauder Companies Charitable Foundation (ELCCF) have funded more than $118 million globally for lifesaving research, education, and medical services, with more than $93 million funding medical research grants through the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). ELC’s commitment to breast cancer research, spanning three decades, has been transformative.
“Through the work with BCRF, investigators have been able to make significant breakthroughs in prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship, and in honor of The Campaign’s 30th anniversary, ELCCF announced that it will donate $15 million over 5 years to BCRF to fund groundbreaking research addressing breast cancer disparities. In addition, The Campaign supports more than 60 organizations worldwide, facilitating real change aligned to the diverse needs of local communities.
“In my time leading The Campaign, I have witnessed incredible work in action and remain inspired by the collective efforts of everyone engaged with our mission. It’s #TimeToEndBreastCancer.”
– Bari Seiden-Young, SVP Global Communications, Citizenship and Sustainability
